In 1991, Rai won an international supermodel contest and was eventually featured in the American edition of Vogue. Her appearance in a Pepsi commercial with actors Aamir Khan and Mahima Chaudhry gave her huge public recognition. She first modeled for Camlin industries when she was in 9th grade. She modelled for Titan Watches, Longines watches, L'Oreal, Coca-Cola, Lakme Cosmetics, Casio pager, Philips, Palmolive, Lux, Nakshatra Diamond Jewellery and Kalyan Jewellers.
Rai made her acting debut in 1997 with Mani Ratnam's Tamil film Iruvar. The film won the Best Film award at the Belgrade International Film Festival. In 1999 she appeared in Tamil romantic drama Jeans directed by S. Shankar. A significant turning point in her career was her role in the romantic film 'Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam' in 1999 directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and co-starred Salman Khan and Ajay Devgan. The film emerged as a major commercial success and won Rai a Filmfare Award for Best Actress.
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan's another successful movie was Sanjay Leela Bhansali's love-saga 'Devdas'. Devdas was chosen as India's official entry for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and received a nomination at the BAFTA Awards in the Best Foreign Language Film category. Some of her other films are Kandukondain Kandukondain (Tamil: 2000), Josh, Hamara Dil Aapke Paas Hai, Dhai Akshar Prem Ke, Chokher Bali (Bengali), Khakee (2004), Shabd (2005), Dhoom 2 and Umrao Jaan in 2006, Guru (2007), Jodhaa Akbar (2008), Sanjay Gupta's action-thriller Jazbaa (2015).

Aishwarya Rai was engaged to Abhishek Bachchan on 14 January 2007 and the couple married on 20 April 2007. Rai gave birth to a baby girl (Aaradhya Bachchan) on 16 November 2011.
