Destiny's Child is an all-female R&B vocal quartet from Houston comprising Beyonce, Kelly, LaTavia and LeToya. The group was formed in 1990 by Music World Management's Mathew Knowles, who recruited LaTavia, Beyonce, and two other girls -- then only seven and eight years old -- to be in an R&B group; Kelly joined in 1992, shortly before the then pre-pubescent quartet appeared on "Star Search," where they rapped instead of sang.
In 1993 LeToya rounded out the current lineup, which scored a breakthrough hit in 1996 with the single "No No No," also found on their 1997 self-titled debut album. Destiny's Child features production by big names such as Wyclef Jean, Pras, Sylvia Bennett Smith, Jermaine Dupri, as well as a number of covers of classic R&B songs.
Their sophomore effort, The Writing's on the Wall, was released on Columbia in 1999. |
